An intentionally designed and well implemented MTSS improves our educational system so that all learners benefit in an equitable way. MTSS helps:

• decrease behavior referrals
• decrease suspensions and expulsions
• improve student attendance
• improve student engagement
• promote a positive school climate
• build relationships and student connection to school

This whole-child approach to supporting students has been shown to improve student academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes. It makes resources, supports, and interventions more readily accessible allowing schools to address the unmet needs of students sooner. The intentional focus on tiered instruction and support helps students to grow in all areas no matter where they start.

MTSS is Equity: With an intentionally designed and well implemented MTSS framework in place, all SMMUSD students have equal opportunity for success by removing barriers and leveraging resources, opportunities, and supports. Differences are viewed as assets, and student identities are honored and supported. Multiple intelligences are encouraged thereby creating a safe space for learning and a sense of belonging for all!
