    MS Sports Coaches Needed

    SMMUSD is looking for Athletic Coaches for the 2024-25 school year for 6th to 8th grade students. Coaches will guide and teach student-athletes skills needed for a specific sport. Coaches will affect students-athletes from John Adams Middle School (JAMS), Lincoln Middle School (LMS) or Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH).

    The following sports teams have openings for various level coaches to support middle school. All coaching takes place after school.
    Basketball
    Cross Country
    ESports
    Flag Football
    Soccer
    Track & Field

    Duties will include, but are not limited to: skill development, coaching, and best approaches to improve conditioning in student-athletes.

    Additional duties include: good practices engaging youth, addressing conflict and inappropriate behavior, exercising useful practices for increasing emotional support and enforcing safety procedures according to District, CIF & youth development expectations.

    Location: Santa Monica, CA

    Time Commitment: After-school. Practices, games, trainings and/or meetings up to 3-4 days/week. Hours breakdown to 8-10 hours/week.

    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

    4. Interviews will be scheduled during the week: please consider which window of time will work for you, either 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. or 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

    Head Coach and Assistant Coach Duties:

    • Take attendance
    • Communicate with parents regarding weekly schedule
    • Communicate weekly with AC Jason about game sites/officials and bus times/early release
    • Maintain facilities and ready spaces
    • Assist other coaches and sports with readying facilities & equipment
    • Assist with cleanup, breakdown & preparation of facilities & equipment at the end of practices and games; as requested by fellow colleagues or as informed by the AC
    • Ensure practices/games/events start and concluded as scheduled, communicate challenges to the AC for support
    • Maintain records of practices/games/trainings when an injury occurs
    • Communicate to other coaches about special school schedules/rules/daily issues
    • In/Out of Season: practice and game planning, offensive and defensive schemes, maintain student growth and team cohesion within the program
    • Conduct practices as scheduled following school and SMMUSD policies and procedures 
    • Head coach/Assigned Assistant Coach - Make suggestions to the AC to improve the programs’ needs for equipment or supplies, as needed
    • Assist in planning the end of season event for the team and special recognition of 8th graders
    • Maintain records of school equipment, including uniforms, balls, etc. 
    • Complete the required state mandated coaching courses
    • Review CIF Blue Book rules pertaining to the sport program
    • Report back game scores and results to the AC for upload to database
    • Assist with coordination of transportation, and supervision of team on away games
    • Maintain safe conditions for participants and colleagues; serve during emergencies to safely expedite participants and guest safe return to their parent or guardian.
    • Assist with tryouts 

    Knowledge of:

    • Behavioral, social-emotional, health and fitness needs, culture, concerns, and characteristics of middle-school-age youth. 
    • Recreational and physical activities; grouping, individual and team-based activities; community builders.
    • Conflict and dispute resolution techniques
    • Use of sports equipment and supplies.
    • First aid methods and safety precautions.
