California Framework (Themes) for Each Grade Level

6th Grade Emphasis: Working cooperatively to achieve a common goal.

    • Students are ready to combine skills for practice in lead-up games (a team, individual, or dual activity leading to an organized sport).
    • Some activities we have taught in our 6th grade PE curriculum are the following: juggling, dance, yoga, swimming, track & field and motor skills that will lead to a physically educated student (dribbling, throwing, striking, shooting, jump rope, etc.)

7th Grade Emphasis: Meeting Challenges and making Decisions.

    • This is an appropriate time to introduce individual risk-taking and individual sports rather than focus exclusively on team sport.
    • Examples of activities we have taught in our 7th grade PE curriculum are the following: pickleball, badminton, frisbee golf and introduction to team sports.

8th Grade Emphasis: Working as a team to solve problems.

    • The emphasis in physical education moves toward team sports, including defensive and offensive strategies.
    • Some activities we have taught in our 8th grade PE curriculum are the following: basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, ultimate frisbee, team handball, softball, etc.

    Physical Education Policies

    • Lock and Locker Policy
All students will be issued a P.E. locker for the entire school year. Students are responsible for damaged lockers. Secure your locker before you leave the locker room. The Physical Education Department assumes no responsibility for damaged, lost, or stolen items.

    • Excuses and Dressing Policy
If students are able to attend school, they are required to dress for their Physical Education class. If it is necessary to be excused from class activity, a note written by a parent or physician must be presented to the nurse prior to arriving to class. If a student becomes ill or injured during the school day, he/she must obtain a temporary note from the nurse. A parent note must be presented the following day. A student excused for more than 3 school days by a parent’s note will be required to obtain a doctor’s excuse and clear it with the nurse’s office before class on the fourth excused day. Students excused more than a week may be assigned an alternate program or written assignment. Extended injuries or illnesses of three weeks or more may require alternative scheduling.

    • Uniform Policy
For your child’s safety and health, we require all students to dress appropriately and wear proper athletic shoes. The approved PE attire consists of:
    • Clean JAMS logo T-shirt (or solid light gray T-shirt)
    • Clean JAMS logo navy blue shorts (or solid blue shorts)
    • Clean JAMS logo navy blue sweatpants (or solid blue sweatpants)
    • Non-marking, rubber soled, closed-toe athletic soles designed for court sports and games
    • Socks
    • Oversized or “sagging” shorts are not allowed. Student’s last name must be printed clearly on all items of PE clothing, last name and first initial. No other markings are allowed on PE clothing

Students who do not dress for PE will receive a nonsuit.

Failure to dress in appropriate physical education attire will result in the following progressive discipline:

    • 3 non-suits per semester will result in teacher discipline.
    • If noncompliance continues, parent contact and a referral to school administrator may occur

Students who need assistance with obtaining a JAMS PE uniform should see their school counselor.

    AMPE / PMPE Attendance

Students are expected to attend AMPE and PMPE from Monday through Thursday.  AMPE takes place from 7:45-8:30am and PMPE takes place from 3:05-3:50pm.  All students are expected to be on time daily.

Students/Families/Counselors will be notified via email or phone call, on the 4th unexcused absence within a semester, that their child is at risk of being removed from AMPE / PMPE.

On the 8th unexcused absence, within a semester, the student will be dropped from the class, and placed in a Physical Education class within the regular school day.  If the student has two electives, then the student will also lose one of their elective courses, due to being dropped from AMPE / PMPE.
