The John Adams Middle School science program is unique in that it uses an integrated approach to teach students how the various areas of science relate and interact with each other. In doing so, the life, earth, and physical sciences are covered at each grade level. Three different science programs are offered at JAMS: 6th Grade Science Enrichment, 7th and 8th Grade Regular Science, and 7th and 8th Grade Science Magnet.
In the 6th grade all students take Science Enrichment. As a 6th grader, students have the opportunity to attend the 6th grade summer institute prior to the start of the school year, attend the Catalina trip in the fall, and take various science seminars after school. During this year students who express a keen interest in the sciences can apply to be in the 7th grade science magnet program.
The 7th and 8th grade levels have two programs; regular science and science magnet. The curriculum covered in each program is the same. However, the science magnet program requires students to participate in additional curricular activities such as the summer institutes, after school seminars, and science magnet projects. Magnet students also have an opportunity to attend the winter institutes (Yosemite Institute in 7th grade and Astrocamp in 8th grade).
