The Santa Monica Alternative School House/John Muir Elementary School Water Intrusion Project is a comprehensive campus-wide endeavor aimed at revitalizing and improving our educational facilities. This initiative involves a thorough renovation of the roofing system, stucco, windows, doors, and flooring, along with substantial structural enhancements. A crucial aspect of this project is ensuring that all classrooms and restrooms adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act compliance standards, while also integrating various other enhancements. We have obtained Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval for buildings A, C, and D and are currently awaiting DSA approval for building B.

An essential goal of this project is to guarantee the comprehensive waterproofing and sealing of the entire campus. This entails meticulous care to uphold the integrity of building envelopes, ensuring that all structures are impermeable to water infiltration and environmentally sound. This precaution is crucial for the durability of campus buildings and the safety and well-being of it's occupants.

The goal is to finish the project in preparation for the fall 2025 academic session, providing students with a revitalized, secure, and cutting-edge educational setting.

Project Progress:

  • The process of removing the exterior stucco has commenced.
  • The scanning, layout, saw cutting, and demolition activities are currently underway to facilitate the installation of new structural footings in Buildings A, C, and D. These tasks began after receiving approvals from the DSA and are expected to persist until mid-April 2024.
  • The excavation and off-haul processes for the new structural footings in Buildings A, C, and D are currently in progress and are projected to be finished by early May 2024.
  • Presently, we are undertaking mold remediation on impacted wood as part of our quality control protocols.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding during the construction process.
