The Santa Monica Alternative School House/John Muir Elementary School Water Intrusion Project is a comprehensive campus-wide endeavor aimed at revitalizing and improving our educational facilities. This initiative involves a thorough renovation of the roofing system, stucco, windows, doors, and flooring, along with substantial structural enhancements. A crucial aspect of this project is ensuring that all classrooms and restrooms adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act compliance standards, while also integrating various other enhancements. We have obtained Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval for buildings A&D and are currently awaiting DSA approval for buildings C&B.

An essential goal of this project is to guarantee the comprehensive waterproofing and sealing of the entire campus. This entails meticulous care to uphold the integrity of building envelopes, ensuring that all structures are impermeable to water infiltration and environmentally sound. This precaution is crucial for the durability of campus buildings and the safety and well-being of it's occupants.

The goal is to finish the project in preparation for the fall 2025 academic session, providing students with a revitalized, secure, and cutting-edge educational setting.

Project Progress:

• Interior Demolition and Mold Removal: Remediation efforts for mold on lumber are currently underway.
• Exterior Stairs Demolition: The demolition of the exterior stairs has been completed, and a temporary staircase has been installed in place of the original.
•  Exterior and Interior Footings: Following approval from the DSA, activities such as scanning, layout, saw cutting, and demolition to prepare for the new structural footing in Buildings A, C, & D have commenced. These activities are anticipated to continue until mid-April 2024.
• Excavation: Excavation and off-haul preparations for the new structural footing in Building D are set to commence on March 15, 2024.
