The Samohi PTSA has planned a series of relevant and dynamic Parent Education Evenings for 2021-2022. As a community, we all need to work together to support and empower our students. Parent Education Evenings are designed to support our parents in being informed about the issues impacting our students. Please save the dates and plan to attend.
All Parent Ed presentations begin at 7:30 PM, unless otherwise stated.
9/14/21 All about FOOD and Nutrition! - Do you have an idea what your students are eating at school? Is the food improved in the new cafeteria? What do they have on offer and what does it look like? Find out from our district Food Services Director, Richard Marchini, and Becky Belinsky, a therapist in Santa Monica working primarily with teens with eating disorders, body image issues and difficult relationships with food.
10/12/21 CSU/UC Admissions Night at 6:00 p.m. - Join the College/Career Center for the virtual CSU & UC Admissions Night! Admission representatives from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara will be presenting on their respective system’s admission and evaluation process, including the removal of the ACT and SAT requirement. Both systems are now Test-Free! You won’t want to miss!
11/9/21 Building Resilience: The Mental Health Impact of COVID on Our School Community - Our own Samohi and SMMUSD mental health expert Shuli Lotan will talk about how to cultivate resilience as the COVID pandemic continues. She will also share strategies on how parents can support their children during this time, and local resources for additional support. They will be joined by Leisle Bartlett of One Love Foundation, who will discuss how her organization educates students about healthy and unhealthy relationships. 1/11/22 Drug and Alcohol Awareness meeting has been cancelled. Meeting will be a COVID presentation instead.
Drug and Alcohol Awareness Presentation by CLARE|MATRIX - Guest speakers will provide information on current trends and issues including Juuling and vaping, why students use drugs and alcohol, signs and stages of use, how to speak with your student about use, and resources available to help families struggling with these issues.2/8/22 Financial Literacy for Students and Financial Consulting for College with Dennis Hum and Stephanie Hancock - Financial Advisor and College Aid Expert Stephanie Hancock has helped countless students attend college affordably. Recently, she launched the "Make College Affordable with College Aid Lady" podcast, of which she is the host. Dennis Hum works as Chase's community manager and will shed light on teaching students to be financially literate as they move towards adult life.
3/8/22 Digital Citizenship and the Log Off Movement - A panel discussion with the founder of the Log Off Movement on the impact of social media addiction and ways to tackle it.
4/19/22 Where are We Now? Earth Day 2021 - Sustainability and our impact on the environment unpacked
5/10/22 How to Talk with Your Children about War - Our children are talking about the war in Ukraine - with each other, with their teachers, and at home. How do we frame the discussion of war, and help our children make sense of the horrific images they may encounter online? Join us for an open panel discussion and Q&A of a vital issue with no easy answers.
