AVID at McKinley!

  • AVID Mission

McKinley is proud to currently be the first and only AVID elementary school in SMMUSD.

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

At the elementary level, AVID schools teach and reinforce academic habits and critical thinking skills that will help students to be successful in middle school, high school, and college and careers. Students learn organizational, study, communication, and self-advocacy skills in an inquiry-based and student-centric way. The goal is to close the opportunity gap for our diverse and underrepresented demographic groups before it begins. AVID ties into our school PRIDE Philosophy, and other strategies already in place at McKinley, to foster a collaborative, safe, and joyful culture of learning. This summer of 2023 our 4th and 5th grade teachers and school administration will be attending the three-day AVID Summer Institute to participate in comprehensive professional development, after which they will bring back knowledge and skills to share with the school community. We also look forward to our future partnerships with JAMS and SAMOHI AVID programs for vertical connections and collaboration.
