• Summer Reading

Over the summer, Samohi students are encouraged to continue reading on their own.  Help your student make time to read -- a daily half-hour is perfect -- and ask your child regularly about what's happening or encourage them to write about it.  Parents, if you too read the assigned books, the experience will be especially rewarding -- for both of you!  If you are looking for suggestions for titles for your student to read, feel free to reach out to their English teacher.

    Summer Reading 2020 Selections:

just mercy book title Samohi’s "All-School Summer Reading" book is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. All incoming students should read the book before the start of school and can expect to spend the first couple of weeks in their English class completing work related to the text.

With the help of a generous fundraising effort and a donation from the graduating class of 2020, any incoming student will be able to check out a copy of the book prior to the start of school.  Designated days (to be announced soon) will be set aside for each grade level to come in and check out a copy of the book.  Books will also be available for check-out at Registration.  A limited number of copies will also be available from the Santa Monica Public Library.  Families are more than welcome to purchase their own copies if they prefer.  Parents are also encouraged to read the book and to start a conversation with their student about the major themes and ideas discussed.

    Honors AP
There is no "required reading" for students going into an Honors/AP level English course.  However, in the past, our students enjoyed reading the following texts:
Incoming 9HP: Warriors Don’t Cry - Melba Beals
Incoming 10HP: Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
Incoming 11AP: The Boys in the Boat - Daniel James Brown
Incoming 12AP: Candide - Voltaire; Othello - William Shakespeare
