Principal's Orum's Message

  • Lori Orum, Principal of Edison Language AcademyWelcome to the 2020-21 school year at Edison Language Academy – Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District’s Dual Immersion Elementary School!

At Edison, all students from Preschool through 5th grade learn in Spanish and English with the goals of: 1) developing proficiency in both languages, 2) mastering curriculum in all other areas, 3) becoming multicultural learners – proud of their own identities and cultures and respectful of others.

Edison is a warm and diverse community and focuses on the development of the whole child. We are fortunate to have a supportive and involved parent community with over 200 trained parent volunteers who support our programs and students in many different ways. Please do whatever you can to support your child’s school with your time, talents, and resources! It takes a village to give our children this kind of education and there’s a place where everyone can make a comfortable contribution.

We offer an academically rigorous program and have been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the US Department of Education and as a Title I Academic Achievement School by the California State Department of Education. Each year, we work to strengthen our students’ academic success – in English, Spanish and all other subjects. There is always academic work to do to move students from good to great and close achievement gaps! This year you will notice a particular focus in writing (in both languages) on helping all students write to grade level standards in all genres with improved conventions and grammar. And with the support of our math coaches, we’ll continue to build our students’ problem solving and computation skills in math.

Our program is also enriched by the arts (music, theater, and visual arts) and a focus on the cultures of the Americas. This year we’re taking another step forward in our STEM work with the launch of Edison’s Edible School Garden and we’re introducing more mindfulness, problem solving, and leadership skills into our Social Emotional Curriculum. If these are particular interests of yours and you want to help out, please let me know.

The materials in this packet are important, so please set aside a little time to read them, fill out the ones that need to be returned and get those back to us as soon as possible. We are excited to open the 2017-18 school year, incorporating 100+ new families and students into the Edison community, and continuing to learn and grow together -- through two languages!
