A sampling of our innovative and exciting programs

  • Artist-In-Residence

    Classroom Technology and Media Center
The Media Center and all classrooms have Macintosh computers linked together in our school-wide network. Teachers and students have access to the school-wide E-mail system and the Media Center's resources: multimedia stations, scanners, digital cameras and color printers. Students work with a variety of instructional software programs and have access to the Internet for research. Our 4th grade classrooms are also piloting the district's evaluation of "Smart Board" technology. The library has over 12,000 books, including bilingual materials available for student use and is catalogued on a computerized library system.

    Fourth Grade Mission Excursion
As part of California Social Studies Standards, all 4th grade students will travel by train to Mission San Juan Capistrano where they will learn about the political, economic and social impact of California's missions and the transcontinental railroad. Fifth Grade Outdoor School Fifth graders spend a week in the Malibu Mountains at Outdoor Science School learning about the environment and the natural sciences.

    Gardening Angels
This plant science curriculum introduces children to soil types, plant life cycles, irrigation, and the joys of gardening.

    Innovative Professional Development
Our highly qualified teachers participate in ongoing professional development tied to research-based instructional practices. Every teacher is a member of a focused instructional group which provides teachers the opportunity to collaborate and engage in learning activities that increase pedagogical content knowledge. Many of our staff have been selected as Cotsen Fellows through the Cotsen Family Foundation whose mission and funding support great teachers in the public school setting. Many teachers are also participating in the district-wide Lesson Link Model adapted from the Japanese Lesson Study model.

    Instrumental and Vocal Music Program
All fourth and fifth graders participate in beginning strings, woodwinds, brass or year-long vocal music instruction. An instrumental recorder music program has been implemented for our 3rd grade students.

Students learn about and write many different styles of poetry. At the end of their unit of study, a poetry reading takes place and a collection of their work is published.

    Reading Counts
This computer-based reading incentive program encourages independent readers to read quality children's literature.

    Science Expo
