At Will Rogers, the social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum. Students at Will Rogers are encouraged to develop self-discipline and good citizenship through the Responsive Classroom philosophy. The Responsive Classroom approach is a widely used, research-backed approach to elementary education that increases academic achievement, decreases problem behaviors, improves social skills, and leads to more high-quality instruction. Students participate in morning meetings in their classroom and attend monthly whole school meetings to discuss “hopes and dreams,” develop goals for themselves and their classroom community, and recognize effort and achievement both socially and academically.

n the Responsive classroom model, Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy and Self Control (C.A.R.E.S.) make up the set of social skills that children need to practice and learn to be successful academically and socially.
