The Santa Monica Alternative School House/John Muir Elementary School Water Intrusion Project is a comprehensive campus-wide endeavor aimed at revitalizing and improving our educational facilities. This initiative involves a thorough renovation of the roofing system, stucco, windows, doors, and flooring, along with substantial structural enhancements. A crucial aspect of this project is ensuring that all classrooms and restrooms adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act compliance standards, while also integrating various other enhancements. We have obtained Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval for buildings A&D and are currently awaiting DSA approval for buildings C&B.

An essential goal of this project is to guarantee the comprehensive waterproofing and sealing of the entire campus. This entails meticulous care to uphold the integrity of building envelopes, ensuring that all structures are impermeable to water infiltration and environmentally sound. This precaution is crucial for the durability of campus buildings and the safety and well-being of its occupants.

The goal is to finish the project in preparation for the fall 2025 academic session, providing students with a revitalized, secure, and cutting-edge educational setting.

Project Progress:

• Preparatory actions such as scanning, layout planning, saw cutting, and demolition have commenced for the placement of new structural footings in Buildings A, C, and D. Approval from the DSA has been obtained for these initiatives. These preparatory tasks are slated to persist until mid-April 2024.
• Excavation and removal of excess soil for the new structural footings in Buildings A, C, and D are currently in progress and anticipated to conclude by early May 2024.

• Ongoing efforts to remediate mold on affected lumber are currently underway and are being managed as part of our quality control protocols.
