Malibu Middle School Sports

Sports Engagement Across Our Middle Schools

Malibu proudly offers a comprehensive, after-school interscholastic sports program designed to give every student the opportunity to play, compete, and belong. Grounded in the philosophy of "Building better students first, and better athletes second," our programs focus on academic success, personal growth, and athletic development across every campus and every season.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District fully funds middle school sports to maintain aligned competitive standards and create a sustainable model for years to come.

The SMMUSD Promise & Core Values
Our sports programs are built upon five core pillars:

  • Compete: Maintaining aligned standards across all middle school campuses.
  • Develop: Fostering both student-athletic and academic success.
  • Connect: Strengthening community and family engagement.
  • Grow: Building program capacity to expand access and opportunity for all students.
  • Sustain: Preserving program integrity, academic standards, and operational consistency.

Season Offerings & Competition
Our teams compete in structured, high-quality leagues alongside local middle schools across Santa Monica, Malibu, and surrounding communities.

More Than a Game: Supporting Student Wellbeing
Our weekday sports programs provide a structured, supportive, and constructive environment during crucial after-school hours. Participation in middle school sports delivers benefits that extend far beyond the field:

  • Belonging & Social Connection: Creates a positive peer community, strengthens friendships, and instills strong school identity.
  • Emotional Resilience & Mental Health: Helps students handle adversity, process setbacks, reduce stress, and improve classroom focus.
  • Structure & Time Management: Teaches responsibility, discipline, and balancing academic achievement with team commitments.
  • Character & Sportsmanship: Builds leadership, teamwork, fair play, and lifelong healthy habits.
