Welcome to the SMMUSD Traditional Independent Study Program (ISP)!
Independent study is a voluntary, alternative instructional model for students whose needs may be best met through study outside of the traditional classroom setting.
SMMUSD will continue to offer the Independent Study EDUCATIONAL Program during the 2025-2026 school year for Grades 6 through 12 only. The Independent Study Program ISP is not a separate school; it is part of your child’s secondary school campus.
In general, success in independent study requires motivation and a strong commitment on the part of the student and his, her, their parents/guardians. Also, sufficient organizational skills and academic preparation are required in order for students to work successfully in an independent manner. Students are expected to be able to access the curriculum, meet standards, participate in teacher directed activities and experiences, and make appropriate academic progress while participating in the Independent Study Program.
