Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students, and Community Members,

As we settle into the new school year, I am encouraged by the energy, engagement and sense of connection across our campuses. Each day, our students are learning, building relationships and discovering new opportunities, while our teachers, staff and families continue working together to support their growth and success. It is a strong reminder that the work we do together creates the foundation for every student to feel supported, challenged and prepared to thrive.

September provides us several important opportunities to reflect on what strengthens our school communities. As we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities and the many ways they enrich our schools, our District and the broader communities we serve.

This month is also Attendance Awareness Month, but the importance of attendance extends far beyond September. Every day in school counts. Each school day offers students the chance to learn, connect with teachers and classmates, and continue building toward future success. Consistent attendance helps students stay engaged in their learning and connected to their school community, and we appreciate the partnership of our families in helping students be present and ready to learn each day.

I also want to remind families about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application. Every student in SMMUSD receives free breakfast and lunch each school day. However, completing the application is still essential because it brings in extra support. It provides our students with academic programs, after-school opportunities, music lessons and important funding throughout the District. The application is simple, secure and confidential, and your participation makes a meaningful difference. The deadline is Friday, Oct. 2. Throughout the fall season, let’s also continue working together to help keep our school communities healthy. Please remember the basics: stay home when you are sick, consider wearing a mask when experiencing or recovering from symptoms, wash your hands regularly, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and avoid close contact with people who are ill. We also encourage families to stay current with recommended vaccinations.
