Who We Support

STATS serves SMMUSD students in grades 6–12 who are experiencing a recent decline in mental health, school engagement, and/or achievement and may benefit from a short-term period of more intensive school-based support.

Students may be experiencing:

  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Anxiety or depression
  • ADHD, impulsivity, or difficulty sustaining attention
  • School avoidance or difficulty attending school consistently
  • Social withdrawal or difficulty connecting with peers
  • A noticeable decline in academic achievement or task completion
  • Difficulty engaging successfully in their current school environment
  • Limited progress despite existing school-based supports

STATS is designed for students whose needs can be supported within a structured, therapeutic, and group-oriented school environment focused on stabilization, skill building, and school re-engagement.

Additional Considerations

Students participating in STATS should:

  • Be able to participate in a small, group-based school environment with appropriate support
  • Attend and actively participate in the program consistently
  • Participate in therapeutic, academic, and skill-building activities

Families and caregivers are expected to:

  • Participate regularly in family/caregiver programming and meetings
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with the STATS team
  • Support consistent student attendance and participation
  • Partner with the team in planning for the student's progress and transition back to their home school

STATS is not intended to replace emergency, inpatient, residential, or other higher levels of behavioral health care.

Interested in STATS?

Families interested in learning more about STATS should begin by speaking with their student's school administrator, counselor, school psychologist, or other appropriate school-based support staff.

The student's school team can consult with STATS to determine whether the program may be an appropriate option and discuss next steps with the student and family.
