Roles & Responsibilities for Special Education Services School Personnel

Principal

Responsibilties:

  • Member of IEP Team Meeting as administrator
  • Ensures implementation of services
  • Ensures implementation of Goals and Objectives
  • Supervises on-site special education personnel
  • Classroom assignments

When to Contact:

  • Not able to resolve special education concerns after talking with school special education personnel
  • School issues unrelated to special education

Psychologist

Responsibilties:

  • Co-develops assessment plan with SAI teacher
  • Conducts assessments as per plan
  • Member of IEP Team as appropriate
  • Provides services as identified on IEP, such as counseling services, social skills training, etc.
  • Develops behavior plans

When to Contact:

  • Questions about assessments
  • Questions about implementation of specific services - counseling and social skills
  • Questions about implementation of behavior plan

SAI (Specialized Academic Instruction) Teacher

Responsibilties:

  • Co-develops assessment plan with psychologist
  • Conducts assessments as per plan
  • Member of IEP Team as appropriate
  • Coordinates scheduling of IEP meeting for SAI students and initials
  • Teacher of Record for SAI students
  • Collaborates with general education teachers
  • Implements goals and objectives as per IEP
  • Provides progress reports towards goals and objective

When to Contact:

  • Referral for special education assessment (initial)
  • Questions about the assessment process
  • Questions about the date and time of the upcoming IEP meeting
  • Request for an additional IEP meeting
  • Questions about implementation of accommodations/modifications in the general education setting
  • Questions about Parents/Guardian Rights

SAI Teacher (Specialized programs)

Responsibilties:

  • Member of IEP Team as appropriate
  • Coordinate IEP meetings for assigned students
  • Teacher of Record for day class students
  • Responsible for differentiated curriculum and instructional strategies
  • Implements goals and objectives as per IEP
  • Provides progress reports towards goals and objectives
  • Collaborates with general education teachers regarding mainstreamed students
  • Collaborates with paraeducators assigned to classroom

When to Contact:

  • Questions about curriculum and/or instructional strategies
  • Questions about goals and objectives
  • Questions about mainstreaming
  • Questions about aides
  • Request for an additional IEP meeting
  • Questions about Parents/Guardian Rights

Itinerant Staff (Speech, OT, PT, APE)

Responsibilties:

  • Member of IEP Team as appropriate
  • Conducts assessments as per Assessment Plan
  • Implements goals and objectives as per IEP
  • Provides progress reports towards goals and objectives

When to Contact:

  • Questions about goals and objectives
  • Questions about services

Paraeducators

Responsibilties:

  • Supports students in general education, special education classrooms, and playgrounds as per the IEP
  • Is a member of the student's learning team
  • Takes data
