School Health Services
Students must be healthy to be educated and educated to be healthy.
The SMMUSD Health Team is composed of Registered Credentialed School Nurses (RCSNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and Health Office Specialists (HOSs). Together, we provide equitable, student-centered care across all school sites, ensuring that each child’s health supports their success in school.
School Nurses (RCSNs)
Every school site is supported by a Registered Credentialed School Nurse-a licensed Registered Nurse with specialized training and a School Nurse Services Credential. Some RCSNs serve more than one site and are vital members of the educational team, using evidence-based practices to support student well-being.
School Nurses are responsible for:
- Managing Health Needs - Care plans, medications, procedures, and chronic health conditions
- Promoting Wellness - Health education, wellness, prevention, and healthy attendance
- Ensuring Safety - Emergency preparedness, response, and staff training
- Providing Screenings - Required hearing and vision screenings
- Supporting Student Success - Collaboration with families, educators, specialists, SSTs, IEPs, and 504 teams
- Connecting Families to Resources - Community health resources and support services
- Promoting Independence - Helping students develop self-advocacy and independence with their health needs
