AVID in SMMUSD

AVID is a nationally recognized elective program that supports students in preparing for and succeeding in rigorous coursework by providing academic, social, and emotional support while maintaining high expectations and helping close the achievement gap.

Students need the skills, tools, and confidence to move forward—and AVID provides exactly that. Through Rigorous Academic Preparedness, Opportunity Knowledge, and Student Agency, students move forward with purpose to college and career readiness. Supported by a proven curriculum that emphasizes WICOR strategies—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading—along with regular tutoring and structured support, AVID equips students to navigate challenges and succeed in rigorous academic environments.

In SMMUSD, students may begin AVID in 7th and 8th grade at John Adams Middle School and continue through grades 9–12 at Santa Monica High School. Within the AVID elective class, students learn explicit strategies to support success in their core courses and participate in collaborative tutorials with trained tutors. Additionally, in grades 11 and 12, students receive targeted support with college applications, personal statements, financial aid, and the academic demands of Advanced Placement coursework.
