Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of a computer or robot to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include reasoning, learning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding.
AI Taskforce (Fall 2024)
In the Fall of 2024, a dedicated Generative AI Taskforce was established within the district to proactively begin discussions on the future integration and role of Gen AI. The taskforce's initial focus was on collective learning, bringing together diverse perspectives to understand the technology's implications for education. Members dedicated their time to researching and identifying key external resources, policies, and best practices that would serve as the foundational support necessary for the successful and responsible launch of AI initiatives across the district.

Staff AI Pilots (Spring 2025)
The EdTech Team recruited over 75 teachers to participate in aGenerative AI Pilot during the Spring 2025 semester, where staffevaluated three leading platforms: Gemini, Brisk, and School AI. After review, both Gemini and Brisk received overwhelmingly positive feedback and were selected as the primary Gen AI tools. While School AI was recognized as a powerful and useful platform, the feedback indicated it presented a large learning curve for staff. Therefore, the EdTech Team has moved forward with providing dedicated staff training for Gemini and Brisk starting in the Fall 2025 semester and beyond, ensuring teachers can harness the power of generative AI in their classrooms.
Staff AI Foundations and Literacy Training (Fall 2025-Spring 2026)
The EdTech team is conducting foundational Generative AI training for all staff. These sessions are designed to build teachers proficiency with the basic tools selected, and are focused on the responsible and effective use of AI. Key areas include introduction to prompt engineering and include discussions on ethical concerns such as data privacy and the existence of algorithmic bias. Thistraining aims to provide foundational generative AI literacy for staff.
Guidelines and Policy (Fall 2025-Winter 2026)
In preparation for the broader adoption of Generative AI tools, the Human Resources department finalized and released the updated Staff Technology Use Policy during the Summer of 2025. This critical update provides the necessary guidelines and expectations for employees utilizing new technologies in their professional duties. Concurrently, the EdTech Team has taken the lead in a separate but equally important initiative, actively working on revising and updating the Student Acceptable Use of Technology Policy to ensure it addresses the unique challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI and maintains a safe, ethical, and responsible learning environment for all students.
Community Outreach (Fall 2025 and beyond)
The EdTech team is reaching out to Educational Partners such as school PTAs and School Site Parent organizations to offer sessions on AI.The goal is to provide an explanation of what Generative AI is and discuss guidance and policy development.This would include a review of Student Data Privacy and Safety, while focusing on responsible use of AI for staff staff and students.
Student AI Pilots (Spring 2026)
The EdTech team is now designing a Generative AI pilotfor high school students for the Spring 2026 semester. This will focus on using Gemini and possibly Brisk Students. Gemini is now a Core Google Service, which greatly simplifies access and security. Brisk would provide a personalized learning experience through chatbots and writing coaches. The team will be recruiting teachers and their high school students to participate in thispilot in January 2026.
