A meeting of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2001, in the Board Room of the District's administrative offices, 1651 16th Street, Santa Monica, California. The Board will call the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. and move to Closed Session in the Conference Room for the reasons listed in Section VI, below.
The public portion of the meeting will convene at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room.I CALL TO ORDER

II WORKSHOP: Advancing Students With the Skills for Success in Mathematics with
Educational Services (5-7 p.m.)
District Goal: The District will create a coherent, equitable and articulated program of instruction in Mathematics K-12, connected to higher education goals.
In an informative and interactive workshop with the Board of Education, staff will address the following topics:
A. Where are we now? Status of standards and assessment at each grade level
B. A review of the data: Who are the students who are not achieving and why?
C. What are the District's plans for future alignment of standards, curriculum, instruction and assessments?
D. What do school sites need to maximally support this goal?
III WORKSHOP: Program Budgeting with Dr. Cohen (7-8 p.m.)
Planning for the conversion of the current budgeting/accounting system to the required new State Accounting System (SACS); and, the potential for the creation of the new program budgeting format.
IV PUBLIC COMMENTS:
Public Comments is the time when members of the audience may address the Board of Education on items not scheduled on the meeting's agenda. All speakers are limited to three (3) minutes. When there is a large number of speakers, the Board may reduce the allotted time to two (2) minutes per speaker. The Brown Act (Government Code) states that Board members may not engage in discussion of issues raised during "VII, Public Comments" except to ask clarifying questions, make a brief announcement, make a brief report on his or her own activities, or to refer the matter to staff.
