CLASS TITLE: BUS DRIVER-HEAVY

 

 BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Under general supervision, drive a school bus with a capacity of 21 passengers or more over a prescribed route within an established time schedule; transport students to and from school, athletic events and on special event trips.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Incumbents in the Bus Driver-Heavy classification operate 21 passenger buses or larger with manual or automatic transmissions. The Bus Driver-Light classification incumbents drive a school van with a capacity of 20 passengers or less to transport disabled or preschool-aged children to and from school.

  

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Drive a school van with a 21 passenger or more capacity over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule. E

Transport students to and from school, athletic events and field trips; load and unload students safely at designated stops. E

Stop traffic and escort children across streets. E

Maintain vehicles in a clean and orderly condition; inspect and report mechanical defects or malfunctions; wash, sweep, clean and refuel vehicles. E

Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment; contact others concerning transportation problems and concerns. E

Complete the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time. E

Administer first aid as necessary.

Perform custodial or clerical work as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION

Supervision is received from the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation.

No supervision is exercised.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Safe driving practices and techniques.

Basic first aid procedures and methods.

General geography of Santa Monica and Malibu.

Safety and maintenance requirements of bus equipment.

Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.

 

ABILITY TO:

Drive a school bus along designated routes safely and efficiently.

Communicate effectively with elementary and secondary school students.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Be flexible.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

One year experience in the operation of a large school bus; current medical examination certificate (as required by DMV).

 

 LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 

Valid California Class B driver's license with passenger endorsement; first aid certificate; successful completion of the California Highway Patrol Bus Driver's examination; current H6 DMV print-out; incumbents are required to maintain a sufficient number of training hours as prescribed by law.

 

 WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

ENVIRONMENT:

School bus environment; driving in various road and weather conditions; noise.

 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS (Continued):

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy objects; sitting for extended periods of time when operating a transportation vehicle; walking and stepping up/down or standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist; hearing and speaking to exchange information.

 

HAZARDS:

Traffic hazards when stopping traffic and escorting students across streets.
