Theaters


The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District has six spaces dedicated to performances. They have fixed seating and are available for rental. (Rental Fee Schedule) They include:

Santa Monica High School

Barnum Hall, our show piece – Built in 1937 by the Works Project Administration (WPA). It is designed in the Art Deco style of Streamline Moderne. The Hall has been fully restored and renovated. Barnum Hall hosts over hundred and fifty school and professional events a year. It seats 1250 with 750 seats in the orchestra and 500 seats in the mezzanine/balcony. It boasts a nine-foot Fazioli Grand Piano and Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ. Technical Equipment & Ability: Full.

Memorial Greek Amphitheatre – Built in 1922 as the Open Air Memorial Theatre, this Greek Style amphitheatre was built to honor Santa Monicans who served in World War I. The Amphitheatre, four blocks from the ocean, is a great venue for concerts, pep rallies and graduation. It seats 3,400 on concrete risers. Technical Equipment & Ability: None, all items must be brought in for performance.

Malibu High School

Theater – This intimate theatre was built in the 1960s and renovated in the 1990s. It is a wonderful venue for theater performances and music concerts. It seats 350. Technical Equipment & Ability: Medium.

Amphitheatre – contemporary style amphitheatre. It seats 700 on concrete risers. No technical equipment available. All items must be brought in for performance.

Lincoln Middle School

Auditorium – Built in the 1960s, this modern theater provides a large stage and an intimate setting for theater, dance, music and speakers. The auditorium seats 550 on one level. Technical Equipment & Ability: Medium.

John Adams Middle School

Auditorium – This iconic school auditorium was built in the 1930s. It seats 650 in a straight proscenium setting. Technical Equipment & Ability: Minor.

The District also has many spaces that do not have fixed seating that are used for performances including:

Humanities Center - Santa Monica High School. Black box theater in school's old library. Adaptable. Capacity up to 160. Technical Equipment & Ability: Medium.

Dance Studio - Santa Monica High School. Rehearsal space with large dance floor and small stage. Capacity up to 150.

Elementary School Auditoriums (Grant, McKinley & Roosevelt) are dedicated auditorium spaces with a small stage, minimal technical abilities and adjustable seating for up to 200.

Elementary School Cafetoriums (Edison, Rogers, Muir, Franklin, Washington West, Webster, Pt. Dume, & Cabrillo) are cafeterias that have a small stage, minimal technical abilities and adjustable seating for up to 200.
