Overview of the
Assessment Process
Purpose
- Gather information about SMMUSD strengths that we want to take forward into the future
for the district and areas of improvement to effect positive change
- Engage a broad span of the community in this process so that we hear from many
perspectives and build a base of committed stakeholders
- Determine the main themes from the assessment in order to help us develop the
key question or topic for the February conference where we will build on common interest
to determine 4-6 priority school goals
Process
- The Design Team developed an interview questionnaire, which was used in over 350
interviews across the district.
- The interview process took place in several large community meetings, at PTA,
community liaison, and business meetings, and one-on-one.
- The interview was prepared in three languages and an elementary/middle school
student version was developed as well.
We interviewed the following
Stakeholder Groups across the following ethnicities and geographical areas:

Overall Themes |
The overall themes, emerging
from the more than 350 interviews obtained in the Assessment portion of the Strategic
Planning Process, represent what people perceive to be the strengths and priority issues
of the Santa Monica/Malibu Unified School District.
Follow the links below to review these themes in two formats. The first format
presents data in table form, the second in an outline followed by quotations from the
community. (To learn more about the entire Strategic Planning Process, click "About
the Process" below.)
