The Invitation Process
The Design Team sought conference participants with these three goals:
1) to bring the collective voice of the SMMUSD community, with all
its diverse facets, into one meeting place;
2) to assemble a group of individuals with a passionate dedication to the fundamental goal
of the Strategic Plan - Excellence and Equality in Education;
3) to identify, as a community, 4-6 common themes around which smaller, self-selected
action groups would form to develop the components of the Strategic Plan
The initial community assessments (see Community Assessment Meetings) assisted the Design Team
in identifying and engaging the major stakeholder groups comprising SMMUSD
- Students, Parents, District Employees, Child Development Leaders, Community
Activists, and Elected Officials. Design Team members conducted an extensive
outreach to each of these groups to recruit potential conference participants. At the same
time, aggressive efforts were made to ensure that the diversity of the district was
similarly represented within each of the groups.
Personal contact was made with nearly 200 individuals to explain the
purpose of the conference and offer an invitation with a "string" attached: a
commitment to attend all two and one-half conference days. Despite the required
sacrifice of work and family obligations, 134 stakeholders attended the conference.
The Participants
Who were these 134 individuals? PTA and various parent support group members, as well as non-affiliated (but no less concerned) parents comprised the parent stakeholder group. Students from grades 6-12 represented a cross section of campuses. Administrators, teachers, community liaisons, librarians, nurses, special service contractees, classified staff and SMMCTA leaders represented Distsrict employees. Leaders and key members of local professional organizations; businesses; community family, health and safety organizations; and elected bodies represented the communities of Santa Monica and Malibu. The outreaching to all stakeholder and demographic groups was rewarded with a rich diversity of participants with respect their ethnicity, geographic area, income level, age, gender, and other demographic characteristics.
