Where
They were Held?
Community assessment meetings were held at four school sites throughout Santa
Monica/Malibu Unified School District. Lincoln Middle School hosted the first
meeting on October 27, Malibu High School held the second on November 14, John
Muir/SMASH hosted the third on November 18, and the final meeting took place at SAMO High
on December 9. Translation was provided at the first three
meetings, and the fourth was conducted entirely in Spanish. In addition, group
interviews were conducted with the PTA Council and Site Presidents and members of the
Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce Business-Education Partnership. A presentation to the
Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors was made, during which mail-in
interviews were provided. (Photos to come.) [back

Notification
Process
Print invitations went home in children's backpacks, emails went out to all district
employees, and notifications (and some articles) appeared in local papers.
Design Team members contacted community members not likely to come across the print
invitations and the PTA Council assisted the Team in spreading the word to the parent
community. [back to top]
Who was
There?
The four meetings brought the hoped for cross-section of attendees: students,
parents, teachers, classified staff, administrators, Board members, City Council members,
representatives from the police and fire departments, and other community members with an
interest in our students' success. As follow-up to the assessment meetings,
interested participants were given additional training to go out into the community and
conduct one-on-one interviews. Finally, the interview was posted on the District
Website in English and Spanish. In all, over 350 respondents participated in one
venue or another. [back to top]
What
Took Place?
At each meeting, participants were introduced to the strategic planning
process and then interviewed one another in pairs. Following the paired interviews,
groups of 6-8 shared and charted highlights of their interviews, beginning the process of
identifying common themes. Finally, the small-group charts were posted, and a
whole-group measure was taken as participants circulated around the room, voting upon the
three themes they held most important. Lively, thoughtful discussion followed,
with many attendees expressing enthusiasm for the process and for the opportunity to meet
new people with shared concerns as well as different perspectives. [back to top]
What
were the Results?
The results of the Assessment Meetings are posted in a variety
of formats on subsequent pages. First, use the "Overview" link for a brief
explanation of the data gathering process. Following this, additional links will take
you to the formatted results. [Overview] [back to top]
