ROP Counselors specialize in career counseling, serving 22 school districts and L.A. County High School for the Arts.  There are 130 programs within the district.

Student Services

Goal:  To provide futures planning, career counseling and job acquisition skills for ALL students by:
  • Providing career guidance counseling to students within an individual or group school setting.
  • Serving as a resource for student educational planning, career and life skills decision-making.
  • Encouraging students to develop and enhance effective interpersonal communication skills and problem solving strategies.
  • Screening students for appropriate program placement.
  • Administering and interpreting career guidance assessments and surveys, including the LACOROP Student Career-Technical Interest Survey.
  • Working with computer assisted counseling programs such as:  VIEW, Choices, or Internet Access.  (Availability of programs varies at each high school).
  • Utilizing career resources such as current labor market information and community based job information.
  • Providing work preparation and job retention assistance, including resume writing, interviewing skills, applications, networking strategies, and portfolio development.
  • Assisting students in locating internships, job shadowing experiences, mentors, and specialized scholarship information.

Staff Support

Goal:  To assist ALL staff and instructors in the career development process by:
  • Supporting the school site guidance and counseling goals.
  • Serving as a resource person for career guidance counseling to site counselors, classroom teachers, and ROP instructors.
  • Providing specialized ROP and career-related workshops to groups of students or staff upon request.
  • Meeting with school and district personnel to ensure that ROP activities are supportive and consistent with the total educational program of the host school and local partners.
  • Assisting in the development of promotional activities, distributing course material, and implementing ROP program support services.
  • Providing support and assisting LACOROP instructors with students who demonstrate behavioral problems, including: crisis prevention/intervention or discipline strategies to support classroom management.
  • Monitoring ROP student progress via attendance and grade reports utilizing student intervention strategies.
  • Facilitating LACOROP student and staff recognition opportunities (i.e. Student of the Month, Outstanding ROP Student of the Year, ROP Teacher of the Year, etc.).

Community Connections

Goal:  To promote a positive image of ROP within the school, district and community by:
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with local partners.
  • Distributing informational materials that reflect the mission of ROP.
  • Assisting with career and college fairs, open house, and back-to-school nights.
  • Supporting student achievement by attending community events.
  • Assisting with transitions to post-secondary options, including community colleges, 4-year universities, career-technical schools, military, or the workforce.
  • Actively developing new programs based on community needs and student interests.
  • Cooperating with School-to-Career goals by creating business partnerships for job shadowing, internships, mentoring, career speakers, and employment.
  • Providing community members with qualified, trained employees.
  • Inviting local partners to participate in advisory committees.
  • Participating in community-based organizations (i.e. Chamber of Commerce, Industry Education Council, PTSA, etc.)
  • Enrolling employees in ROP courses to upgrade current career technical skills.
  • Maintaining our commitment to work-based learning for students through the use of paid or unpaid community placements.
  • Arranging field trips to enhance certain class experiences or curriculums.

All ROP Counselors:

  • Are highly qualified counseling professionals.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Pupil Personnel Service Credential.
  • Participate in on-going professional growth activities to promote excellence in the field of counseling.
  • Support the National Standards for School Counseling Programs developed by the American School Counseling Association.
