The Humanities Center Theatre is an intimate, 200 seat, black box, multi-use space, located on the second floor in the English Building on the Samohi campus. It currently is the location for all the theatre and film classes taught at the high school. The space has been used for the many dramatic productions the high school presents, as well as musicals, student written and directed "One-Acts", Café SAMO, and poetry slams.
For the many performances that have taken place in the "small theatre," the various seating configurations can accommodate the multiple ways a play or musical may be presented: proscenium, thrust, or in the round. There are no obstructed views from any seat in the house, and no seat is more than 100 feet from the stage.
The Humanities Center Theatre is fully accessible with a wheelchair lift at the north-west corner of the building, which takes accessible patrons from ground level to the second floor of the English building. From there, patrons enter the building where the entrance of the theatre is down the hall to the right. Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are located just outside the entrance to the theatre (ushers will direct you).
Please advise us in advance if you know you will be needing to use the wheelchair lift so we may have someone from our staff assist with the elevator operation. You may reach us at at 310-458-5939.
Please note:
- There are about 20 steps up to the second floor of the English building.
- All performances are on the SANTA MONICA HIGH SCHOOL campus.
- As a courtesy to other patrons, children under the age of three will not be admitted.
- The performers strictly request that the use of flash photography be prohibited after the show has commenced. Flashes are extremely distracting to the performers and affect their performance. Please be considerate.
- Please turn OFF or SILENCE all pagers and mobile phones. Many of these devices interfere with our sound system.
