Course Descriptions

Japanese 1 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in English/Language Arts class the previous semester.

Students will learn to communicate in basic Japanese and learn about the Japanese culture. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Basic reading and writing skills will be introduced.

Japanese 2 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester Japanese course.

Building on the foundation of Japanese 1, students will further learn to communicate in basic Japanese and learn about the Japanese culture. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Basic reading and writing skills will be further introduced.

Japanese 3 P
Grade Level: 10-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester Japanese course.

Building on the foundation of Japanese 1 and 2, students will solidify listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills needed to function in everyday situations in Japan through use of college-level textbooks, workbooks, audio/video tapes, and other materials. Students will enhance their cultural awareness through exploration of various topics of interest.

Japanese 4 HP
Grade Level: 11-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester Japanese course.

Building on the foundation of Japanese 1, 2, and 3, students will solidify listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills needed to function in everyday situations in Japan through use of college-level textbooks, workbooks, audio/video tapes, DVDs and other materials. Students will further enhance their cultural awareness through exploration of various topics of interest.


Japanese AP
Grade Level: 11-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in preceding semester Japanese course.

The AP Japanese Language and Culture course is designed to be comparable to
college/university Japanese courses that represent the point at which students
complete approximately 300 hours of college-level classroom instruction. Like the
corresponding college courses, the AP course supports students as they develop
the productive, receptive, and cultural skills necessary to communicate with native
speakers of Japanese. Students’ proficiency levels at the end of the course are
expected to reach at least the Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid range, as
described in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
Proficiency Guidelines.
