Course Descriptions

Mandarin Chinese 1 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: None

Students will learn to communicate in basic Mandarin Chinese and learn about the Chinese customs and cultural practices. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Basic reading and writing skills in pinyin and the simplified Chinese character system will be introduced. The course content and structure will be aligned with the state's World Language Content Standards and its Foreign Language Framework.

Mandarin Chinese 2 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Passing Mandarin Chinese 1 or equivalent.

Students will learn to communicate in basic Mandarin Chinese and learn about the Chinese customs and cultural practices. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Intermediate level reading and writing skills in pinyin and both simplified and complex Chinese character systems will continue. The course content and structure will be aligned with the state's World Language Content Standards and its Foreign Language Framework.

Mandarin Chinese 3 P
Grade Level: 9-12
Meets UC/CSU requirements (pending)
Year course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Passing Mandarin Chinese 2 or equivalent.

Students will increase their proficiency in communicating both oral and written forms through direct instruction, collaborative/cooperative learning and discussion as well as learning about the language through history and philosophy, customs, and cultural practices. This course will include both the simplified and complex Chinese character system. The course content and structure will be aligned with the state's World Language Content Standards and its Foreign Language Framework.
