Samohi Home I Houses

HOUSE CHANGES AT SAMOHI

In the opening weeks of school, Samohi’s Houses will be changing but the essential components of the House System will remain the same. According to Samohi’s Principal, Dr. Hugo Pedroza, “Our students, teachers and staff will be architects and builders of the ‘new look’ of our House system, deciding what to call these Houses – to either keep the current letters (S, M, O, H, or I) or come up with something new.  The Samohi community will envision name choices and work together to name their Houses.”

The House System will continue to serve our students in the personalized environment of our "small learning communities" during the transition from six to five houses, as follows:
  • All twelve advisors will remain at the school to support rising seniors. All seniors will remain with their advisors for the 2009-10 school year.
  • Our new freshmen will join the Samohi family and be placed in one of five Houses (S, M, O, H or I) on campus.
  • A House students and advisors, and Outreach Specialist Jeff Keller, have been reassigned to M House, under Principal Larry Boone with M House teachers.
  • A House teachers have been reassigned through the remaining 5 Houses, distributed so as to balance Houses in terms of subject area and numbers.
  • M House students (incoming 10th and 11th graders) are being reassigned to remaining Houses. M House students were given an opportunity to rank, in order of preference, their choice of placement, which is being considered but not guaranteed.
  • One M House advisor remains with M House, assigned to M House seniors only. The other M House advisor has been replaced by a returning advisor, who is assigned to S House. S House has 3 advisors, one of whom is assigned to S House seniors only. The advisors who carry only seniors in their workload have other student support duties.
