English Classes - Beginning ELD


Beginning ELD

Course Overview:
This class introduces non-English proficient students to the English language and American culture. Students will learn to read, write and speak English through various activities including but not limited to an understanding of simple classroom instruction, completing school forms (emergency cards, book and library cards, etc.) and knowledge of school facilities. Students will learn basic English grammatical structures and become acquainted with American traditions and customs. This two-hour course counts as one year of college-prep English for U.C. and Cal State University entrance requirements.

Content Objectives:
  • The English Learner will gain basic communicative proficiency in the English language through reading, speaking, listening and writing activities.
  • The English Learner will become familiar with school procedures and activities.
  • The English Learner's self-confidence and interest in academic achievement will increase.
  • The English Learner will develop basic understanding of English grammatical structure as well as writing conventions (such as spelling, for example).
Performance Skills/ELD Literacy Standards:
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform the following tasks which are aligned with the State of California's ELD standards.
  1. Communicate verbally in English (basic interpersonal communicative skills) with both English only and English Learner students.
  2. Use nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives correctly in beginning level tasks.
  3. Identify and use conjunctions, interjections and prepositions in beginning level tasks.
  4. Identify grammatical mistakes such as misspellings, run-on sentences and sentence fragments.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of subject-verb agreement as well as singular-plural agreement and verb-tense agreement in written and oral work.
  6. Learn regular and irregular verb conjugations necessary for basic communication.
  7. Correctly use possessive forms as well as contractions.
  8. Capitalize and punctuate basic level written work correctly.
  9. Write a five-sentence paragraph in English that is coherent in tone and content.

Promotion Requirements:
The English Learner must pass this class with a grade of "C" or better to progress to the next level of ELD instruction (Intermediate ELD). Students not achieving a grade of "C" or better may be assessed for special learning needs or may be required to repeat the course for no credit.
