At its meeting on July 16, 2014, the Board of Education approved the appointment of Mr. David Jackson as the Interim Principal at Malibu High School for 2014-15.

On the decision to appoint an Interim Principal, Superintendent Sandra Lyon explain, “Appointing an Interim Principal will ensure a smooth start to the school year, and it will allow our district time to create a strong search so that we find the right person for the position in 2015-16.”

Mr. Jackson has extensive experience in secondary and post-secondary education.  He retired in 2007 after serving as Principal of Calabasas High School for two years.  Prior to that, he served as the Assistant Principal at Agoura High School in the Las Virgenes Unified School District; Principal at Royal High School in the Simi Valley Unified School District; and Assistant Principal at John Burroughs High School, David Starr Jordan Junior High School, and Luther Burbank Junior High School in the Burbank Unified School District.  He has taught Business Law and Advanced Accounting at both the high school and post-secondary levels.  After retiring in 2007, Mr. Jackson consulted with the Las Virgenes Unified School District as a coach for administrators as well as worked with the Las Virgenes Educational Foundation regarding secondary academic programs.  He has experience in the private sector, serving as Vice President of Sport Fun, Inc., where he oversaw human resources, risk management, customer service, and contracts.  He also serves as an expert witness in educational issues.

Mr. Jackson is well-versed in best practices for running a comprehensive high school, including those addressing core curriculum, VAPA, athletics, special education, student organizations, master scheduling, and school safety.  He has a knack for identifying a school’s short- and long-term needs, and then effectively planning a course of action that will benefit the students, staff, and community.  He collaborates with school personnel to establish clear lines of responsibility and holds everyone, including himself, to a high standard.  Under his leadership at Calabasas High School, the school earned the National Blue Ribbon Award and received a six-year “clear” WASC accreditation.  Mr. Jackson received the Chevron Business Education Teacher Award while at Cal State Northridge, was recognized by the PTA at both Burbank USD and Simi Valley USD, and received the Burbank Leadership Service Award

“I would like to welcome Mr. Jackson to SMMUSD for 2014-15,” commented Lyon.
