63rd annual ‘stairway of the stars’ Concert

On March 22 and 23, 2012, at 7:00pm, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will present the 63rd Annual Stairway of the Stars at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica.

This event remains one of the most popular annual events in both the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, as it spotlights the talents of the district's music students, teachers, and music curriculum.

This year, twenty-six bands, orchestras, and choirs will dazzle the audience at the Stairway of the Stars concert and will focus on the Band program.  Overall, approximately 1,000 student performers will be involved in the event.  The guest conductor for the 2012 Stairway of the Stars will be Tom Cole.

2012 Stairway Guest Conductor – Tom Cole

Tom Cole has been a music educator in the Poway Unified School District since 1975 and just retired from Rancho Bernardo High School in June of 2010. Prior to his appointment at Rancho Bernardo High School, he taught for fifteen years at Mt. Carmel High School. His groups have performed at the MENC Western Region Convention in Fresno, 1985; MENC National Convention Anaheim, 1986; World Youth Music Festival in Geneva, Switzerland, 1985; a cultural and musical exchange in Japan, 1989; Tournament of Roses Parade in 1984, 1988, 1994, and 2001; represented the State of California and the Bicentennial celebration of the signing of the Constitution in Philadelphia in 1987; tour of Washington D.C., 1992, and a tour of Hawaii in 1995. Under Mr. Cole’s direction, his bands have been recognized for excellence in all levels of concert bands and marching bands. Mr. Cole has conducted adjudication seminars for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. He was guest conductor of the Lancaster Honor Band, Hart Union High School District Honor Band, Poway Unified School District Middle School Honor Band, twice with the All Southern California Junior High School Honor Band, the San Diego All City Honor Band and most recently the California All State Junior High School Honor Band. Mr. Cole studied conducting with Benton Minor, Frederick Fennell, Larry Christiensen, H. Robert Reynolds, Alan McMurry, Thomas Lee, Jerry Junkin and Eugene Corporon. Mr. Cole received his Bachelor of Music and Teaching Credential from California State University Fullerton, and his Masters Degree in Music Education at Southern Oregon State. In 1988, Mr. Cole received the Honorary Life Time Achievement Award from the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association and in 2007 was honored with the California Band Directors Association Lifetime Achievement award.

2012 Stairway Honor Award Recipient – Chandra Narain

Each year, the district’s twenty-three music teachers nominate and vote on the “Stairway Honor Award Recipient.”  This award is presented to a former student, teacher, or person who has achieved a level of success in the arts or who has contributed enormously to the advancement of music and arts education in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School district. This year, the 2012 Stairway Honor Award recipient will be Ms. Chandra Narain. Chandra Narain has served the Santa Monica-Malibu USD for almost twenty-three years. She has worked most of her twenty-three years in support of the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. She currently works in Education Services as an administrative assistant specializing in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Chandra will agree that she is one of the hardest working, kindest, most generous souls they have ever met! Chandra serves hundreds, if not thousands, of people each year with a personal touch that somehow makes everyone feel as if his or her needs are a top priority. She helps support the elementary music department, visual art departments, theatre and dance at all school sites. Some of her job duties include scheduling of instrument repairs, ordering of method books and supplies for 2,400 elementary music students and ten elementary music teachers. She is so extremely talented and gifted and makes her very difficult job look easy! Stairway of the Stars happens each year thanks to the tireless efforts of Chandra, and the music teachers felt that she was long overdue to be honored as the Stairway Honor Award Recipient, so 2012 is the year it will finally happen!

This year the ensembles that will perform at Stairway of the Stars are the All-District elementary honor orchestra, choir, and band; high school jazz ensemble; as well as the middle and high school orchestras, choirs, and bands. Some of the musical selections will include: “Shenandoah,” “Symphonic Dances, Mvt. 5, Belly Dance,” “Capriccio Espagnal,” and “Sing, Sang, Sung.”
