SANTA MONICA HIGH SCHOOLíS NEW SYNTHETIC TURF FIELD AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT AND COMMUNITY USE

Thursday, Oct. 27, 3:30pm will mark the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new synthetic turf athletic field at Santa Monica High School (Samohi). This exciting event for both the students and the community will offer enhanced recreational use for Samohi during school hours and will be available to the public during non-school hours.

The new synthetic turf athletic field will provide practice space for track and field, football, soccer, and the Samohi Marching Band; it also provides game space for the freshman and junior varsity football and soccer teams. The field will increase community space for recreational leagues in Santa Monica.

The field marks the start of the redevelopment of the cultural, recreation and public realm areas of the Samohi campus, known as the Civic Center Joint Use Project (CCJUP), a partnership between the Santa Monica-Malibu School District and the City of Santa Monica.

The goal of the CCJUP is to provide and enhance the Samohi campus with new facilities and improve the opportunities for cultural and recreational activities for the City of Santa Monica. The Samohi campus and existing programs will be maintained or upgraded with no permanent loss to school activities or athletic facilities. As part of the CCJUP, additional facility improvements at Samohi include the replacement of an older gym facility with a new gym and support facilities and upgrades for the Greek theatre.

As of October 28, the City will begin to manage the issuance of the permits for the new field and other recreational facilities. The community can obtain further information regarding hours of operation, fees and permits by visiting www.smgov.net/recreation or by calling the Community Recreation permit office at 310-458-8300, extension 1.This project is funded by the City of Santa Monica , Redevelopment Agency.
