TRAGIC DEATH OF SAMOHI STUDENT
The tragic death of student Matthew Mezza has shaken the SMMUSD community. Especially affected are Santa Monica High School (Samohi), John Adams Middle School, and Grant Elementary School, where Matthew attended.
The District’s objective has been to help students, staff, and parents manage the understandable feelings of shock, grief, and confusion. District administration, principals, school staff, and PTA parents worked during the weekend to communicate information and organize support for our students, staff, and parents for the opening of school on January 18. School counselors, along with therapists from our community mental health agencies, were on campuses today to support students and staff and guide those who may need additional support to school and community resources. The District will continue to provide both short-term and long-term support for students and staff impacted by this tragedy.
Memorial services for Matthew Mezza will be held at the Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary (6001 W Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90045) on January 19 at 3:00pm. Given the circumstances, it is recommended that individuals use their utmost discretion when deciding whether to attend the funeral based on whether or not they have a direct connection with Matthew or his family.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the following:
· Santa Monica High School Baseball Team (Santa Monica High School Baseball Diamond Club 601 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica CA 90405)
· Youth Suicide prevention hot line (TEEN LINE: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, PO Box 48750, Los Angeles, CA 90048-0750, teenlineonline.org)
The SMMUSD community’s thoughts and prayers are with Matthew’s family.
