SMMUSD Welcomes new administrator!

 

At its August 18, 2010, meeting, the Board of Education approved the appointment of Rebecca Chu as the new Assistant Principal at Roosevelt Elementary School.

 

Ms. Chu comes to SMMUSD from the New Open World Academy in Los Angeles, where she has been teaching third grade.  Prior to that, Ms. Chu taught second and third grades at Hyde Park Elementary School in South Los Angeles, eleventh and twelfth grades at First Presbyterian School in Arcadia, and served as an assistant language teacher at the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program in Japan.  As a grade level chair, she has been part of a collaborative team to plan professional development for writing and reading instruction, backwards planning standards, as well as applying for and receiving grants for professional development. 

 

Ms. Chu is Nationally Board Certified and well-versed in implementing best practices to close the achievement gap, having developed a testing strategies plan to move students to proficient and advanced on the CST.  She is a natural leader, having served as grade level chair, student government advisor, BTSA support provider, school site council member, Marathon Kids lead teacher, and Network for a Healthy California lead teacher.  Ms. Chu is fluent in Mandarin and speaks conversational Spanish and Japanese.

 

I would like to welcome Ms. Chu to SMMUSD and know that she will work closely with the sites principal, staff, and community to build upon Roosevelts success, commented Superintendent Tim Cuneo.

 

The Assistant Principal position became open when the former Assistant Principal, Victoria Hurst, was appointed as a Special Education Coordinator for the district last month.
