Arbor Day 2010 and 40th Annual Earth Day Take Root at Santa Monica Schools

Santa Monica On April 22nd, the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will celebrate Arbor Day 2010 and the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by planting two large Camphor trees at Los Amigos Park. Prior to the tree planting ceremony, SMASH and John Muir Elementary School Principals will lead student assemblies on the type of tree being planted, proper tree care, and how trees benefit the environment overall. The new trees will be located adjacent to the playground and will provide shade to students for years to come.

As a cooperative project of the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica-Malibu School District, funding for the trees was provided the Santa Monica City Council as part of a City initiative to increase shade in park playground areas. John Muir Elementary School Principal Tristan Komlos and SMASH Principal Jessica Rishe will host the event on behalf of SMMUSD.

Due to the large number of students participating in the celebratory event, two half-hour planting ceremonies will be held. The first ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM, with the second ceremony following at 11:10 AM.
