Reminder: SMMUSD to Sponsor Three Community Open House Events on the Strategic Plan Update

Santa Monica and Malibu residents, parents, and other stakeholders are invited to attend the first of two rounds of Community Open House events designed to educate the communities about the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Strategic Plan Update Process.

“Tell Us What You Think” is the theme of the first round of three Open Houses scheduled in mid-April designed primarily to share information about the process and the content of the District’s Strategic Plan, the document the District uses to clarify its long term vision, identify key priorities, and guide decision-making.

In this first round, three Community Open House events are slated to take place – two in Santa Monica and a third in Malibu.  They are planned for Monday, April 12, 6-9pm at John Muir Elementary School (cafetorium); Tuesday, April 13, 6-9pm at Lincoln Middle School (auditorium); and Thursday, April 15, 6-9pm at Malibu High School (old gym).

“The whole idea is to give the communities that the District serves an opportunity to tell us what they think are the most important issues we in the District should be addressing, to clarify those assets and strengths that should be preserved and protected, and to better understand the opportunities for improving the District and our schools,” said SMMUSD Superintendent Tim Cuneo.

The Open House events are designed to be a “drop by when you can” format – instead of a formal presentation, attendees can stop by the Open House venues anytime between 6-9pm and spend twenty minutes or two hours, strolling through and reading the information posters set up in “stations” around the room.  Attendees can also leave written comments regarding the information on large format post-it notes at each of the stations.  All of the comments will be captured and summarized in an Open House summary report.  District staff, along with members of the Strategic Plan Team (a collection of District staff, school administrators and teachers, and committee members formed to help guide the Update process) will be on hand to answer questions and guide participants through the Open House process.

“Engaging our communities, both Malibu and Santa Monica, is such an important aspect of our work here at the District – I encourage everyone who can to join us at these very exciting and interesting Community Open House events,” said Board of Education Member Jose Escarce, who is also a member of the District Strategic Plan Team.

Free childcare will be available at each of the Open House events – please contact Sarah at 310.450.8338, ext 229 to hold a spot.  Food and refreshments will also be provided.  All the information in the Open House will be in both English and Spanish.  Spanish-speaking hosts will also be in attendance to lend support with the Open House information.

A second round of three Open House events is scheduled for early June to introduce the emerging draft District Strategic Plan to the communities before the District Board approves it (expected in late June/July).
