Will Rogers Elementary School 2010 title i academic achievement award recipient

Will Rogers Learning Community, a K-5 elementary school in SMMUSD, has been identified as a 2010 Title I Academic Achievement Award recipient.

On February 10, State Superintendent Jack O’Connell personally called the principal at each school that received the award to congratulate them and to thank them for all the school’s hard work at meeting the challenge to close the achievement gap.  Superintendent O’Connell commended the principals for their “commitment to educational excellence for all students.”

SMMUSD Superintendent Cuneo stated, “The Board of Education and I are proud of the Will Rogers teachers and staff for being recognized as a 2010 Title I Achievement Award recipient.  Their hard work and dedication has resulted in consistent gains in student achievement.  This award reflects their commitment and support of our district’s mission to ensure extraordinary achievement for all while simultaneously closing the achievement gap.”

“This award is a tribute to the hard work of late principal, Irma Lyons, and Will Rogers assistant principal, Mary Anna Noveck,” commented Dr. Sally Chou, Chief Academic Officer.  “The teacher leadership and staff are also to be commended for their work in making Rogers such a terrific school.  Their efforts to promote S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education give the school a renewed focus on teaching and learning in the 21st Century.”

Will Rogers was identified as a recipient because it met the 2008 and 2009 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria and met the 2008 and 2009 Growth Academic Performance Index (API) targets for the school overall and for all numerically significant subgroups.
