SAMOHI
JUNIOR WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR SERVICE
Comprised of five students representing the categories of
health, education, environment, economics, and community, these students were
awarded for making significant contributions through service. The award was
presented June 5th in
Secretary Duncan and The League, a national youth
service organization empowering young people to make a positive difference in
their communities, combined forces to create the ALL AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL
SERVICE TEAM. Their mandate is to shine a spotlight on the positive difference
high school students are making in their communities, the nation, and the
world.
Lulu was specifically awarded for her leadership as the
co-president of the Santa Monica High School Solar Alliance (SSA), a large and
influential student-run environmental organization on the Samohi
campus. Through education, structural modifications and the promotion of
student-activism, SSA works to green Samohi and
SMMUSD.
Currently, SSA's largest campaign is Bike Day,
which aims to reduce the district's carbon footprint through
encouraging students to reduce their carbon footprint by getting to school
without a car. Last week's Bike Day had over 1000 participants between
