SMMUSD Board of Education Appoints New Board Member

On August 9, 2007, Mr. Ralph Mechur will be appointed to the Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education.

Mr. Mechur has lived in Santa Monica for thirty years, and has been an active member of the community for twenty-five years.  He served as President of SMMUSD’s Education Foundation for eighteen years, on the Facilities Master Plan Committee for three years, on the Measure “BB” Advisory Committee, on the Santa Monica Planning Commission for eight years (serving as chair for four years), on the SMMUSD Capital Improvements Oversight Committee, and on the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board for five years (serving as Chair for two years).

“I look forward to working with the community and the Board of Education to continue efforts to maintain excellence in education in our schools and access and opportunity for all our students,” said Mechur.

“Bringing Mr. Mechur on board will be a smooth transition due to his level of involvement, expertise, and demonstrated past commitment to the district,” said Board President, Kathy Wisnicki.

“Mr. Mechur is certain to be a valuable asset to the SMMUSD Board of Education,” said Superintendent Dianne Talarico.  “He brings a wealth of knowledge to the board based on his participation on numerous district committees and advisory boards during the past several years.”

Mr. Mechur has also held teaching positions, including Project Coordinator with the Los Angeles City Building Educational Programs, Coordinator with the Hoover Street School Environmental Learning Project, and most recently as a Studio Lecturer at USC’s School of Architecture.

During his spare time, Mr. Mechur enjoys surfing, playing soccer, and reading.
