January is School Board Recognition Month!

 

As part of January’s celebration of School Board Recognition Month, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is joining other school districts across the country in building awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society.

 

School Board Recognition Month recognizes the governing boards of California’s more than 1,000 school districts and county offices of education for their commitment to providing quality public education to California’s schoolchildren.

 

“SMMUSD’s board members are dedicated individuals who are passionate about the achievement of all students,” said Superintendent Dianne Talarico.

 

“The board members strive to prepare future generations of students for success,” Talarico said. “On behalf of the children I serve, I commend the board members for their service.”

 

The men and women serving the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and their years of service are:

Dr. Kathy Wisnicki, President – two years

Oscar de la Torre, Vice President – four years

Emily Bloomfield – four years

Dr. Jose Escarce – six years

Maria Leon-Vazquez – six years

Kelly Pye – newly elected

Barry Snell – newly elected

 

To honor its school board members, the district is recognizing the efforts and dedication of the board members at the January 18, 2007, board meeting being held at the Santa Monica City Council chambers.  Superintendent Talarico will make presentations to each board member during the meeting.  The cities of Malibu and Santa Monica are scheduled to present proclamations to the board recognizing its service to the community and district students.  Additionally, a “Get to Know Your Board Members” section will be added to the district website (www.smmusd.org) with more detailed information regarding each board member, such as favorite book, personal hero, and inspiration for running for the position of board member.
