SANTA
MONICA-MALIBU UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
HOSTS
COMMUNITY PLANNING WORKSHOPS
COME
HELP PLAN GREAT SCHOOLS WITH SMMUSD!
On Saturday, February 25, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30
p.m., the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will hold the first of
four Facilities Master Plan workshops.
All community members from Santa Monica and Malibu, including teachers
and school district staff and administrators, as well as students and their
parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the planning process. Workshop #1 will be held in the Santa Monica
High School cafeteria. Free parking is
available off Olympic Boulevard in the lot next to the Technology
building. Free childcare will be
available to those who telephone 310-450-8338, ext. 100 by Thursday, February
23. Juice, coffee, and pastries will be
served.
Workshop #1 will focus on the current District
facilities and needs, as well as community needs and assets. Information on facilities issues from site
inspections and survey information from teachers and District staff will be discussed
and supplemented with observations by participants. School facilities and programs will be mapped in the context of
the communities’ physical, cultural, educational, economic, organizational and
educational resources. Participants
will explore ways to enhance programs and learning environments for all levels
of District programs by using both school and community resources.
For further information, interested community members
should go to the project website at www.ourschoolplan.com and review the
documentation. The Participate! webpage
allows interested parties to sign up for the Community Planning Committee. Or simply sign up at the workshop meeting!
The Facilities Master Plan (FMP) will identify the
facilities needed to achieve objectives of the 2002 Strategic Education Plan
created by the district. The Strategic
Plan established seven educational initiatives—abundant resources, curriculum,
differentiated instruction, equity and equality of education, schools as
community centers, optimal class size, and universal access to quality early
childhood education, family support programs, and after school care.
Subsequent workshops for the Facilities Plan will be
held from 9:30 to 12:30 on Saturday March 25, April 29, and June 3. The March 25 meeting, at Webster Elementary
School in Malibu, will look at facilities in light of future enrollment and
programs. All community members are
encouraged to participate, working together to make the District’s public
schools even better places to learn.
