SMMUSD’s Board Appoints Interim Superintendent

In a closed session meeting on February 23, 2006, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s (SMMUSD) Board of Education proudly appointed Dr. Michael Matthews as interim Superintendent. Beginning Monday, February 27, Dr. Matthews will assume the day-to-day operations of the office and will officially begin as Interim Superintendent on Friday, March 3, 2006.

Dr. Matthews will assume this post as the District says good-bye to outgoing superintendent, Dr. John Deasy, who heads to Maryland to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer for Prince George’s County School District. Ms. Julia Brownley, Board President, stated that “with the pending departure of Dr. Deasy the direction of the District will stay the same and the work will continue without interruption.”

The District will begin the process of a Superintendent search and welcomes Dr. Matthews’ application should he choose to apply for the position. After eleven years as principal of Malibu High School, Dr. Matthews joined the District Office senior management team as Assistant Superintendent, Chief of Staff.
