SANTA MONICA-MALIBU UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT RECOMMENDS

NEW ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT - SPECIAL EDUCATION


At its meeting of January 20, 2005, the Board of Education will hear a recommendation to appoint Dr. Timothy Walker as the new Assistant Superintendent - Special Education. “The School District is indeed fortunate to have attracted such an outstanding candidate as Dr. Tim Walker. I am ecstatic to have someone of Tim’s high caliber joining our leadership team.” said Superintendent, Dr. John Deasy.

 

Dr. Walker’s most recent position was that of Director of Special Education for the Glendale Unified School District, a district of 28,500 students. He has been a teacher, principal and coordinator in Special Education and has earned two Masters Degrees in Human Development and Education and a Doctorate from Point Loma College. Dr. Walker is noted as a team builder with a focus on supporting school sites in their ability to meet the educational needs of the students they serve. He works collaboratively and values cooperation and open channels of communication. Dr. Walker has expertise in Special Education law which will be a benefit to the District.

 

He has chaired a Textbooks Selection Committee, Curriculum Selection Committee, Severely Handicapped Curriculum Committee and Americans with Disabilities Act Committee. He also teaches “Organization and Administration of Special Education,” a Masters Course at CSU, Northridge. With three school-age children, Dr. Walker is active on the PTA Council.

 

Dr. Walker came highly recommended. He is described as meeting and exceeding all expectations established for him, is known as a strong and effective leader, has the right combination of good human relations and negotiations skills, and is well respected by his colleagues.

 

“Tim Walker has the knowledge, skills and abilities to implement the Strategic Plan for Special Education”, Dr. Deasy added. It is expected that he will make a transition to SMMUSD within the next week.”
