Response to Shooting Near Edison School

On Tuesday, September 28, there was a shooting incident on Virginia Avenue near Edison Elementary School. Edison’s school staff led by principal, Ernesto Leon, immediately locked down the school and all children and staff were kept safe. The police were on the scene immediately as was school superintendent John Deasy. The Superintendent and police personnel complimented Principal Leon and his staff for handling the incident in a superb manner. Children who were on campus participating in the after-school CREST program were released when the police deemed it clear and safe.

This morning, Wednesday, September 29, police, community organizations and the School District’s Crisis Team, led by Marolyn Freedman, returned to the school before children arrived to meet with and provide information to the staff and community. Counseling was set up for both staff and students as well as instructions to staff about developing appropriate strategies when talking with the students who may have heard and/or witnessed the event. The Crisis Team will meet with the CREST staff and with the children who witnessed the shooting. Support staff will remain in place throughout the end of the week.

A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 4, 6:30 p.m. at Edison Elementary School, 2425 Kansas Avenue, when representatives from social services, the Police Department, City and School District staff can come together to discuss how to promote safety.
