Board Completes Superintendent's Evaluation

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education has completed its annual evaluation of Superintendent John Deasy. The Board used a wide variety of information sources in developing its evaluation. The evaluation encompassed summative assessments of the Superintendent's general performance and his achievement on four specific performance targets. Following are the results:

Target Area

Finding/Achievement/Level
Enhance Communication/build Collaborative Relationships Completely Achieved
Implement Strategic Plan - Year One Completely Achieved
Develop Assessment Model Substantially Achieved
Develop Instruction Model Substantially Achieved

At its meeting of September 18, 2003, the Board of Education affirmed that it was extremely pleased with the Superintendent's performance during his second year in the District. In accordance with his contract, the Board voted to award the Superintendent a performance bonus of 7.5% of his salary ($11,250). Reflecting on the continuing, critical budget crisis facing our schools, Mr. Deasy respectfully declined the monetary award. This is the second year that Mr. Deasy has earned a performance bonus. Last year he also declined to accept a 6.2% ($9,375) bonus because of the severe cuts in state and federal funding to public education.
