MASSIVE SIX-YEAR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION
AND MODERNIZATION PROJECTS COMPLETED
The School District reaped the rewards of a significant savings as the six-year school construction and modernization projects came to a close under budget. The Board of Education received the final budget report on the status of the Proposition X school construction projects at its Board meeting of May 7, 2004. A litany of accolades and congratulations punctuated the presentation on the remarkable final status report of this project.
School District Chief Financial Officer, Ken Bailey and Director of Facilities Management, Wally Berriman delivered the good news on the accomplishments of the project. The project launched with the passage of School Bond Proposition X in November 1998 was headed for real difficulties by 2000. The energetic team of the new Superintendent, Chief Financial Officer and Director of Facilities Management took the reins, redirected the project and worked with Jacobs to dramatically alter the project.
Today, the Board celebrated the following completed projects:
160+ new classrooms placed into operation;
New competition gymnasium;
New cafetorium;
2 new softball fields;
New baseball field;
New competition pool;
New track and field complex;
New Greek Theater; and
Transformation of the learning environment through the modernization of all classrooms.
Highlights of the Proposition X program include:
Santa Monica High School
Barnum Hall Restoration
8 classroom addition to the Language Building
New Music Building
Malibu High School
New classroom building
New gymnasium
Conversion of Cafetorium into an auditorium with orchestra pit
New Track and Field Complex
John Adams Middle School
Cafeteria renovation
Auditorium renovation
Lincoln Middle School
Pool renovation
and new classrooms, play fields, walking paths, recreation support buildings, and playground equipment at various elementary school sites.
The entire project was accomplished with funds remaining. All monies transferred from the District's deferred maintenance and developer fees have been returned in full. Budgets remain which allow the District to consider the two final projects which were delayed until a final budget was presented.
The diligent work of the Proposition X oversight committee was critical to the team and District success.
